New STIHL central warehouse in Völklingen
The STIHL Group is setting the course for further growth, especially in the developing field of batteries, through the operation of a new central warehouse in Völklingen, Germany. Planning, construction and commissioning of the building, which recently celebrated its topping out ceremony, is being carried out in cooperation with STIHL Tirol. In the future, all products manufactured at the site in Langkampfen will be stored and distributed at the new warehouse. STIHL Tirol is heavily involved in the project and is responsible for the operational management of the central warehouse. As a centre of excellence for ground-based gardening tools, STIHL Tirol has specialised in the production of battery-powered tools for several years. The new central warehouse will supply all STIHL sales subsidiaries worldwide, as well as STIHL specialist dealers.
The new logistics and distribution site replaces the previous warehouse in Strasbourg, France, which reached its capacity limits due to growing product demand. "This important strategic step will enable us to meet the consistently high demand for STIHL products and serve our customers even better and faster," explains Clemens Schaller, the managing director of STIHL Tirol. While the building is under construction, central warehouse handling processes and structures are also being set up and optimised – a number of STIHL Tirol employees are involved in this effort. Completion of the new building is planned for mid-2022. The central warehouse will go into full operation on 1st January 2023.
Strategic location and highly modern facilities
The central warehouse represents the largest warehouse in the STIHL Group covering 58,000 square metres – equivalent to about eight football pitches. The new location in the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg has several advantages: Firstly, the central warehouse is directly connected to the motorway, allowing for an efficient and flexible supply chain. Secondly, the 120,000 square metre site offers space for the warehouse to expand, ensuring STIHL is prepared for future growth.
"The new central warehouse significantly increases our capacities, enabling customer-oriented market supply. It also forms the basis for competitive logistics by optimising processes from order placement to delivery fulfilment", emphasises Christoph Krismer, project manager for the central warehouse at STIHL Tirol. The new building impresses with its flexible and state-of-the-art warehousing and picking technology, such as self-propelled picking devices and smartwatches that replace classic hand scanners by displaying stock levels and instructions. This enables ergonomic and flexible workflows.
Hellmann Worldwide Logistics partner for STIHL central warehouse
The new central warehouse will be operated by Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. Clemens Schaller is pleased with the cooperation: "The company Hellmann is a strong partner that will provide strategic support through innovative concepts in the areas of warehouse management and finished goods logistics, as well as competent contacts for distribution logistics. Hellman's many years of expertise will also support us as we grow in the rechargeable battery business."
